Communities

My Sustainable Canada is actively advancing its mandate to advance consumer and corporate citizenship in support of sustainable consumption through research, knowledge exchange and collaborations with a variety of communities.

Sustainable Consumption Community

Description of Community:  In Canada, researchers and practitioners have been involved in numerous activities that seek to further our basic understanding of sustainable consumption and to encourage citizens be mindful consumers.  A major challenge lies in bringing these activities together to bridge the gaps in knowledge, cooperation and vision on sustainable consumption.  There is also a need to build greater understanding and support among the wider public, media and decision-makers.  My Sustainable Canada's Sustainable Consumption Community will bridge these gaps.  Membership in this community provides the opportunity to:
  • Learn about the current state of policy and research on consumer behaviour and sustainable consumption in Canada.
  • Connect with researchers, practitioners, managers and policy-makers  that are undertaking work to reduce the use of natural resources and toxins, as well as reduce air and energy related emissions associated with consumer activities.
  • Exchange information on strategies, programs and tools that could influence a greater number of consumers towards incorporating sustainability into their purchasing decisions.
  • Stay informed on sustainable consumption in Canada and around the world by subscribing to updates from My Sustainable Canada's E-Bulletin and Events Calendar.

Environmental Best Practices for Ski Resorts

Description of Community:  The Ontario Snow Resorts Association (OSRA) has actively been promoting environmental best practices to its membership since 2003 through the creation of the OSRA Environmental Best Practices Taskforce.  This taskforce serves as a forum on issues related to environmental sustainability, where ski resort operators can exchange information on best practices and work collaboratively with one another and with other partners to prevent pollution locally and regionally.  The taskforce has developed an action plan that reflects the environmental priorities of ski resorts across Ontario.   Key accomplishments include the development of an Environmental Best Practices Manual and the creation of the Engine Idling Reduction Program for Ski Resorts.

Web 2.0 Ethical Consumer Learning Circle

Description of Community: With recent changes in technology, consumers could have ready access to information on grocery or non-food products, both at a product and even a specific production line/supplier basis. There are various stakeholders who may wish to be involved in any attempt to empower consumers to vote with their pocketbook, using modern hand-held devices. Members of this learning circle have agreed to begin a Canadian dialogue on this topic and are working towards the development of action plans.
